The MTN Awards

Through the CWSA Peer Education Programme, achievements of youth participation were recognised and acknowledged at the MTN Awards adjudication and prize giving ceremony. The ceremony was held on 11 and 12 August 2011 in Elukwatini, Mpumalanga province. The MTN Awards serve to inspire and motivate learners to achieve in the areas of mathematics, science, literacy, arts and culture, economic management sciences and life orientation. Learners following the life orientation component are encouraged to present messages based on the information and skills instilled by the peer education programme.

The CWSA Mpumalanga office assisted by briefing the schools involved in the peer education programme regarding the MTN Awards and also assisted youths in putting their experiences into actions.

The Peer Educator Programme strives to raise awareness around issues affecting youth and the MTN Awards provided a platform upon which youth could raise these issues. Speeches, dramas and poems were dedicated to this end. The event was organised and coordinated by MTN. Fifteen schools participated and learner turnout and participation was exceptionally good.

“Working in communities where HIV and AIDS, poverty, unemployment and abuse are prevalent, the peer educator programme endeavours to effect change in behaviour and attitude,” says Johan Bosch, CWSA Mpumalanga Provincial Manager.
