Selecting care facilities |
|
Early Childhood Development facilities, which include crèches, nursery schools, play groups and day mothers are primary protection facilities for young children and the selection of an appropriate establishment is an important decision for parents. Working parents depend on child-care facilities that are not only affordable but also accessible. Unfortunately some people exploit this need and provide less than satisfactory care. Visit a number of facilities before placing your child or children in care. The following simple checklist will assist your assessment:
- Is the facility registered with the local Department of Social Services? There should be a certificate with a registration number and details of where this was issued.
- Does the facility have a health certificate issued by the local municipality? You are quite entitled to ask for a copy.
- Is the environment and facilities offered child-friendly? Check play equipment and ground surfaces for safety.
- Are there essential safety measures, such as enclosed play areas and controlled access to the street, and is suitable parking available for dropping off or collecting your child?
- Are personnel appropriately trained? Ask for the credentials of people working there.
- What security measures are in place regarding the collection of your child by another person?
- What toilet facilities are available and are adequate sleeping and eating areas provided?
- Is there a timetable for activities and stimulation programmes? Children thrive on regular routine and stimulation programmes are necessary for the development of your child.
- Does the facility provide nutritious food? A healthy diet is a pre-requisite with a limit on processed foods. Remember to advise of allergies to any foods.
- Are special arrangements in place if your child becomes ill? First aid kits are fine, but are the personnel trained in medical aid and CPR? Also make sure that the emergency contact details of your family doctor are on record.
- How many children are there per teacher or caregiver? The size of classes or groups is important to consider; smaller is generally better.
- Request the contact details of two parents to call for a reference.
- If the facility provides an education programme, it should be registered by the provincial Department of Education. Is this so?
Facilities that are well run are often booked up far in advance. Plan ahead and book your child into a selected care centre or pre-school well before the starting date to avoid disappointment.
